LAURAN HEBBERD - ‘HONDA CIVIC’

Writer’s Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Lauran Hibberd is at least for my money the most exciting act in the UK right now. Last year saw the release of her debut album Garageband Superstar, an album I believe to be the best debut of the year and those who have heard it know just how good she is. ‘Honda Civic’ is the first single released after her album last year and it is a bold, confident step forward into the next chapter of her career.

More of a straightforward, angsty rock offering than other tunes in her catalogue, ‘Honda Civic’ dials in on it and almost over delivers. The charm of Garageband Superstar and some of its best songs for me was the blending of genres and sounds, tracks like ‘Still Running (5K)’ and ‘Rollercoaster’ feel like she threw darts at a genre dartboard and was able to make bangers from what she landed on whereas ‘Honda Civic’ feels very focused and concise. That’s not to say this is a bad song or that the others I mentioned are, this is just to say that this feels a little bit different from those.

Lyrically, this is another verbal takedown of a shitty boy from her past and the earworm chorus will get stuck with you for days. It’s been stuck with me for way longer than I’d care to admit just through snippets and clips I found on Twitter leading up to the release. If you need to get some anger out of your system, about someone who wronged you in the past then this is the tune for you.

Lauran Hibberd is definitely an artist to keep an eye on over the coming months as whatever she’ll do will be interesting and it will be good. Whatever ‘Honda Civic’ is the first step towards I am excited to hear it and you should be too!
