KNEECAP - ‘BETTER WAY TO LIVE’
Writer’s Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Ask most people who they think they most influential Irish artist is currently you’re bound to get one of two answers, KNEECAP or Fontaines D.C. and now we finally have a chance to hear what it would sound like if the two behemoths of the scene joined forces. ‘Better Way To Live’ isn’t your typical KNEECAP hip hop offering, instead switching the 808s for live drums played by Fontaines’ Tom Coll and live bass played by Andy Nicholson aka Goldteeth, original bassist of Arctic Monkeys.
The change of pace here is a welcomed one as it shows a different side to Belfast premiere hip hop act. We always knew there was more to KNEECAP than meets the eye but the question was when would we see it. Forming what is tantamount to an Irish alternative supergroup has allowed us to see just what the trio are capable of with the help of some well pedigreed friends. As expected, the lyrics flow and change seamlessly between Irish and English as they sing about their desire for a better life. The lyrics are every bit as fun and playful as they are bittersweet and heartbreaking. The duality of the jokes and the more serious moments plays perfectly with the blend of languages in the song.
As we move forward to the inevitable KNEECAP debut record it’s very exciting and promising to see them branch out and be more experimental in their sound. As they grow as artists and lyricists it’s easy to see and only adds to my excitement for this album, whenever it may release. For now, all I know is Irish music is in an incredibly healthy place and this is all the proof you need.
