GREEN DAY - ‘THE AMERICAN DREAM IS KILLING ME’
Writer’s Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
American rockers Green Day make a triumphant return with the first release from their upcoming album 'Saviours' due for release in early 2024. The release sees the band reunite with producer Rob Cavallo, known for his involvement in releases such as 'Dookie' and 'American Idiot'.
The single 'The American Dream is Killing Me' is exactly what we expect from the band. A powerful rocker packed with the characteristic power chords, catchy lyrics, a swaying bridge section, and a heavy political discourse woven throughout. Its anthemic qualities highlight the darker sides of American culture: unemployment, the housing crisis, the impact of social media, and unquestionably, the current tumultuous political landscape.
In a statement, Billie Joe Armstrong described the track as “a look at the way the traditional American Dream doesn’t work for a lot of people — in fact, it’s hurting a lot of people". The American Dream is an idealised notion featured in the arts for decades; idealised as in unattainable. A band as formidable as Green Day scorning it in the 21st century speaks volumes.
The track was accompanied by a music video directed by Brendan Walter and Ryan Baxley is packed with visual metaphors. Set in an apocalyptic setting riddled with people affected by the rise in consumer culture, turned into zombies by its negative impact. It's anarchy and wit personified. There is a clear statement about the power of music in times of sadness and disruption as the crowds reach out to the band, not in malice but in admiration.
With the announcement of the band's 14th album also comes the news of a US tour with support from The Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid, and the Linda Lindas. The band has also teased an upcoming UK and Europe tour with dates yet to be announced.
In short, 'The American Dream is Killing Me' is a raw and anthemic track with lyrics that highlight the darkness of modern society with a helping of humour and cynicism. Green Day are back, for sure!
