Frozemode, the up-and-coming alternative rap group from London is made up of I.V. Gatlin, Lisong, and Cho-Hollo. Releasing their debut mixtape ‘DEMODE’ in late 2023, the trio are gaining attention in the UK's underground music scene thanks to their electrifying live shows and a fresh mix of rap, punk, and grime sounds, becoming a must-see at various UK festivals like Reading and Leeds and The Great Event. They really focus on a natural, off-the-cuff vibe in both their shows and how they create music, often going with the flow when inspiration hits. Trailblazing a new wave of alternative music and mixing that edgy punk spirit with genuine rap grit, Frozemode are taking things to the next level with their second mixtape ‘DEMODE 2’.
Kicking off with ‘ASBO BOYS’, Frozemode really shows you what they’re about. In the background, we have catchy guitar riffs with distortion, fast paced percussion with nice little siren sound effects. against stereotypes and criticism. If you’re unfamiliar, an ASBO (Anti-Social Behaviour Order), which is a legal order in the UK meant to curb disruptive behaviour. Standing up to stereotypes and criticism, they confidently claim that, contrary to popular belief, they’ve never engaged in any antisocial behaviour and hold strong principles. They tackle claims of imitation head-on, poking fun at those who judge them without really knowing their story. They share their rise from modest roots to success, address jabs about their looks, and brushes off those who pretend to be tough but really aren’t. The vibe is all about confidence and defiance, flipping negativity into something to be proud of.
‘BLACK HOLE’ starts with a lively mix of jungle and house sound, instantly creating an upbeat atmosphere. The background music has a nostalgic feel, like it’s from the 2000s, which brings a sense of familiarity while still feeling fresh. There’s a slight change in vibe with ‘KURAMA’ as it has a sharper edge to it, wrapped in a sense of darkness and mystery that really makes it unique. It explores alternative tones and matches with lyrical themes of battling inner demons, and the desire to protect loved ones and the overwhelming darkness that threatens to consume them, creating an atmosphere that's both captivating and a bit eerie.
‘MANDEM NAH’ opens with an electrifying brass fanfare that instantly recalls the lively vibe of a hazy 1920s scene, whisking you away to a time filled with jazz and hidden bars. As the brass instruments take charge, a solid backbeat drops in, pushing the rhythm forward with unyielding energy. ‘NO ASSUMPTIONS really shines with its strong drum and bass vibes, giving it a heavier and more intense feel compared to the rest. The chorus is super catchy, and you can totally picture how hard it goes when performed live. Plus, there's a half-time breakdown that throws in an unexpected change of pace, creating a moment that really hits home and sticks with you.
Tell you what, ‘DEMODE 2’ absolutely slapped. All five tracks were different but worked together collectively. There’s a harmonious mixture of different sounds and vibes, and the lyrics explore different themes but this shows the range and creativity the trio have, and how well they work as a unit.
