FEVER 333 — ‘READY ROCK’
Writer’s Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
FEVER 333 are no strangers to controversy. The new era's leading voice in protest rock, the band have always courted controversy and welcomed discourse around race, equity and discrimination, especially in music. Their newest single ‘READY ROCK’ is a rallying cry against the hardships the band have to go through as a black band in a majority white space. This song is a call out against the stagnation in rock music and how they, as black artists, believe a lot of white musicians are scared that black musicians will reclaim rock music through innovation and hard work.
Guaranteed to ruffle the feathers of all the right people, as is every song from the band, this song is an absolute anthem and hits home with all of its points. Rock and roll music came from black musicians and now, when it’s seen as a white genre, most of the bands innovating the most have black members. The old rock gatekeeper types hate this but it’s not wrong. ‘READY ROCK’ just proves every point made here as the band’s signature style bending skills are on full display here. Frontman Jason Aalon Butler’s vocals shifting from rapping to screaming to singing at the drop of a hat is something we’ve come to expect by now but it never gets any less impressive. The intensity from him as well as the rest of the band as this track goes through the motions, taking cues from punk, hardcore, rap and more is something to behold and makes for one of the band’s best tracks yet.
With the release of the band’s second album coming, this song is a clear and direct mission statement. Lyrically laying down the gauntlet and stating the band’s purpose, the fact is they are here to stay. This is a truly unbelievable song from a truly undeniable band and I can’t wait to hear what they have waiting for us next.
