BRÒGEAL - ‘SUNDAY MORNING’
Writer’s Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Ahead of their headline Celtic Connections show at the famous King Tut’s, Falkirk’s pride and joy Brògeal released ‘Sunday Morning.’ The lads’ blend of classic folk and contemporary trad is on full effect here but this time their influences from further afield become more evident. A punchy electric guitar line compliments the toe tapping banjo melody perfectly and truly encapsulates what this band is about. The mix of contemporary Scottish folk with the attitudes and presence of indie and punk highlights them as one of Scotland’s ones to watch.
As Daniel Harkins sings about his hometown of Falkirk and the general mundanity of life in the grey town, you can tell the love he has for the place. The song is very familiar and reminiscent of the greats at every turn. ‘Sunday Morning’ feels and sounds exactly like how The Pogues would sound if they were breaking out in 2023. As Daniel sings about his Sunday mornings, having a wee hangover and getting on with the day, you feel attached to it. This is something we all feel and we all know the feeling of, the fact the band can get such a great track out of such a boring and silly topic is proof they’re as good as I repeatedly tout them to be.
As we near the release of their debut EP, it’s obvious we have a special band on our hands. If they’re kicking off the year by packing out King Tut’s we can only imagine how they’ll end the year. The sky is the limit for these lads and at every turn they just keep getting better and better. Up The Brògeal.
