THE PRODIGY - MANCHESTER, UK.
The Prodigy at the AO Arena, Manchester, UK (17/11/2023).
with support from Soft Play!
Electronic rock group The Prodigy have had a tumultuous few years to say the least. Following the passing of Keith Flint there were many questions around the future of the group. It was clear the band had all intentions to continue performing in honour of Keith and in November 2023, their ‘Army Of The Ants’ tour hit arenas in the UK - here's what went down in Manchester.
Opening the show was the recently renamed Soft Play (FKA Slaves). Nothing’s changed apart from the name and the duo are still one of the most intense live acts on the planet. Bursting out the gate with recent single ‘Punk's Dead’ there was a connection with the crowd instantly established. They've not released a large amount of music under their new moniker so their set did consists of fan favourites, tracks like ‘White Knuckle Ride’ and ‘Fuck The Hi-Hat’ roaring across Manchester arena. Closing with ‘Beauty Quest' and ‘The Hunter’ riled the crowd up for one final hurrah before Jack Saunders took stage for a dj set between Soft Play and The Prodigy.
The Prodigy kicked their set off with a bang. ‘Breathe’ immediately got the crowd moving, large pits opening in the crowd as Maxim danced around stage with an unmistakable energy. They didn't slow things down either, moving straight into ‘Omen’, a roaring breakbeat track and keeping the energy high.
A touching tribute to Keith Flint during ‘Firestarter’ was a nice touch. Closing their main set with the triple run of ‘Poison’, ‘Need Some1’ and ‘Smack My Bitch Up’, The Prodigy had already delivered one of the best and most high-energy live sets of the year.
The encore kicked off with ‘Take Me To Hospital’ before roaring into ‘Invaders Must Die’. ‘Diesel Power’ slotted in for the first time since 2017 before the final two tracks kept the energy up. The crowd bouncing along to every beat of ‘We Live Forever’ before ‘Out Of Space’ bought things to a close.
The Prodigy have become renowned for having one of the best live shows on the planet and after seeing it first hand that makes sense. There's a connection between the band of the crowd and pits that would make most alternative crowds cry. It doesn't look like they're slowing down anytime soon, with festival dates already announced for 2024 and if they're near you, I recommend making the venture to see them.
