ONE ON ONE: AN INTERVIEW WITH LASTELLE!

We caught up with Adam of Lastelle at Download where we discussed blending post-hardcore with cinematic brass and synths, their tour with InMe, the ‘dream come true’ moment of playing Download Festival and much more!

HOW ARE YOU?

Adam: I am fabulous. I’m hot! It feels so different because last year obviously we were standing in the rain, and now.. It’s like the extremes, one or the other. So we’re going with hot.

I WAS GOING TO SAY HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT THE VERY NONTYPICAL DOWNLOAD WEATHER

Adam: I know right! Very nice, it is nice but yeah, a little bit hot.

YOU’RE PLAYING AT 11.45 ON THE DOGTOOTH STAGE ON SATURDAY, HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT IT?

Adam: We are – Super super psyched. You know, this is our first opportunity to play here at Download in the main arena, so we’re so excited. Obviously nice and early so people can wake up and get a nice little dose of Latelle in the morning. So yeah, super excited.. Obviously the nerves are building but it’s because I’m so excited. Of course It’s like a dream of mine coming true.

A PROPER PINCH ME MOMENT. A BIT OF NERVES ARE GOOD I THINK, IT MEANS YOU CARE.

Adam: Yeah, totally! I can not wait.

IT’S WELL DESERVED AS WELL, HOW DID THE OPPORTUNITY COME ABOUT?

Adam: So last year we actually played in the R.I.P Courtyard stage, which of course we were like super chuffed that we got that opportunity, so we played that, we absolutely loved it and we stayed for the whole week. Enjoyed the whole time and were like “this is amazing, hopefully one day we’ll get the opportunity”, and then a few months pass and we got the call. And it was like we’d love the opportunity to play on the Dogtooth stage.

I WAS GOING TO ASK A QUESTION ABOUT BREAKING DOWN YOUR SOUND A LITTLE BIT, OBVIOUSLY YOU’VE GOT SOME BRASS ELEMENTS, YOU’VE EVEN GOT A BIT OF SYNTH IN THERE, WHICH ISN’T TYPICAL FOR POST-HARDCORE. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO MIX THOSE ELEMENTS?

Adam: So we really want to create a sound that’s quite cinematic, and I think we’ve really tried to embody post-hardcore but also post-rock. So we have those big swells, the big drops and stuff. We love that side of post-rock, but of course the emotional charge of post-hardcore. So yeah, we wanted to create a sound that’s cinematic, that wall of sound and just that emotional full-on full-body sound. That’s why we have those layers like the brass, the added synth and things like that.

IT COMES TOGETHER VERY INTENTFUL, IT DOESN’T FEEL LIKE A LATCH-ON OR LIKE A GIMMICK, IT BLENDS TOGETHER TO ADD TO THIS WALL OF SOUND AS YOU DESCRIBED. IT SOUNDS GREAT.

Adam: Thank you so much!

HOW DID THE TOUR COME ABOUT WITH IN ME?

Adam: Well when we got the offer, we were just like.. “InMe?!”.. That’s so rad! Our guitarist Rich, he literally turned to us and he went “the first song I ever learnt on the guitar was an InMe song” so it was so like.. Oh my god. This old school post-hardcore emo band and we were just so chuffed that we got that opportunity. When we went on tour with them, we’ve created this bond with them, and we call them Dad.. because they’re our Dad. They’re our Dad band. So we love them, but yeah, really loved that opportunity.

‘THE SECRET SUPERPOWER’ TOUR IT WAS CALLED RIGHT?

Adam: That’s right!

GOING OFF THAT, YOU PLAYED A LOT OF INTIMATE VENUES I SAW, YOU HAD THE HAIRY DOG IN DERBY FOR EXAMPLE. MY PERSONAL FAVOURITE. HOW DO YOU FIND PLAYING THOSE MUCH SMALLER VENUES LIKE 300-400 CAP VERSUS SETS LIKE THIS?

Adam: Well to be honest tomorrow’s probably going to be the biggest set we’ve ever done, and the thing is, I think personally our sound works really well with a big space. The smaller the room the more they tell us to put tape on our cymbals because they’re really loud. I’m excited to be able to put it on a sound system that can handle our wall of sound. So excited for that but at the same time I love a tiny venue. I love being on the floor moshing with people and having a good time, so I won't ever turn down a little venue, I love a little venue. So yeah I’m excited for that.

THERE’S SO MUCH CHARM WITH THE SMALLER VENUES AND IT’S SO MUCH MORE OF A COMMUNITY FEEL.

Adam: Totally. And the thing is, when I was younger I feel like I went to so many shows where there were floor shows, and I feel like over time that’s not too much of a thing anymore, and I always remember growing up and being like “If I’m in a band, I’m going to be on the floor and I’m going to have fun”. And that’s what I intend to do.. Maybe not tomorrow, I’ve got a lot of room on the stage, I’m going to stay on the stage tomorrow. But, I wouldn’t turn down a small venue.

I THINK LIKE YOU TOUCHED UPON, YOUR SOUND REALLY COMPLIMENTS A STAGE LIKE THE DOGTOOTH, AND ONE DAY BEYOND I’M SURE.

Adam: I hope so yeah! Absolutely, I’m excited to be able to showcase that type of music, that post-rocky and post-hardcore music on a bigger stage. So excited for tomorrow.

ARE THERE ANY UPCOMING UK ARTIST THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHOUT OUT?

Adam: There’s so many amazing artists at the moment. The one thing I feel pretty sad about, and I’m going to tell them right now, is that I’m sad I’m missing Graphic Nature. Because not only are they amazing, but they’re lovely guys. So absolutely love them, shout out to them. Of course Mouth Culture are like.. They’re rad, and I want them to grow as big as they possibly can because they’re lovely and they sound amazing. So yeah there’s so many amazing bands, but yeah, Graphic Nature and Mouth Culture are definitely on my playlist. They always come up on my Spotify cause I just absolutely love them.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, WHAT’S NEXT FOR LASTELLE? ANYTHING IN THE WORKS?

Adam: So, yes absolutely. On Monday we’ll be announcing a headline tour, a UK headline tour, so we are so excited to be able to.. Because tomorrow we’ve only got about twenty minutes, not going to be able to showcase too many songs.. But it means that our headline shows in September, we’ll be able to showcase more of Exist Vol.1, Exist Vol.2 and you know, play those shows as a headline artists. So we’re Super excited about that. And yeah..
