We caught up with Knife Bride at 2000 Trees Festival to talk about their latest offering ‘Melancholia’, the bands direction in their nu-gothica era and more!

I AM HERE DIRECT FROM 2000 TREES FESTIVAL 2024 AND I’M HERE WITH KNIFE BRIDE! AND THIS IS A HIVE MAGAZINE INTERVIEW. WE’VE CHATTED PREVIOUSLY AT NO PLAY FESTIVAL IN LIVERPOOL, AND VUKOVI WERE PLAYING ON THE LINE-UP. YOU’VE NOW SUPPORTED THEM AT THE ELECTRIC BALLROOM HEADLINE, DO WE RECKON WE COULD SEE MORE VUKOVI AND KNIFE BRIDE IN THE FUTURE?

Mollie Clack: It was so fun! We would absolutely love that!

Sean Windle: It would be our honor to X with Vukuvi.

Mollie Clack: Yes it really really would. We did.. what? Four shows. So three Germany shows and then finishing at the Electric Ballroom [London], and yeah, I would say we are raring for more.

Sean Millsopp: They’re just the best dudes. It’s really nice being around them so yeah, we would love that.

DO YOU HAVE ANY SHENANIGANS THAT WENT ON WITH VUKOVI WHILST IN EUROPE AND BACK TO LONDON?

Mollie Clack: There’s always a bit of shenanigans, but it’s like.. What happens in Rome stays in Rome, you know?

Sean Windle: Isn’t it Vegas? “What happens in Vegas..”

Mollie Clack: [realizes] Oh okay ooh!

Sean Millsopp: Hamburg was a lot of fun!

Mollie Clack: Yeah Hamburg was a lot of fun. I think there might have been a little bit.. A lot of drinking.

Craig Glynn: I had a really really late night with them all after the Electric Ballroom show, and the sun was up when I came back. It was one of them.

YOU RELEASED ‘MELANCHOLIA’ LAST MONTH, AND AS A BUDDING GUITARIST AND FOR ALL THE GUITAR NERDS OUT THERE, HOW WAS THE INTRO RIFF WRITTEN?

Sean Windle: I just fuck about, as ignorant as that sounds. I like to think I know what I’m doing, but sometimes I just go for the jankiest sounding thing possible, and the weirdest sort of intervals. Sometimes it comes together, sometimes it’s horrible. But that sometimes sounds great.

IT SOUNDS SO RIGHT TO THE EARS. IT SOUNDS GOTHIC. A VAMPIRE ABOUT TO BITE YOUR NECK TYPE OF VIBES. THAT’S WHAT YOU’RE LEANING INTO, AM I CORRECT?

Mollie Clack: I think so. I think when we rebranded into the nu-gothica era I think we wanted to lean into something more serious, a bit darker and all encompassing, in a  sensual theatrical way.

I NOTICED THE ARTWORK LOOKED LIKE IT WAS RENAISSANCE INSPIRED WHICH IS A ROMANTIC PERIOD, IS THAT THE ENERGY YOU’RE GOING FOR WITH THESE SONGS?

Mollie Clack: Yeah definitely, I know we wanted to work with surreal art and I want to make sure we’re giving credit to our wonderful artworker as well, world of wings, we’re really really lucky to be working with them. We’re hopeful that we will work with them going forward. We saw them working with Creeper because they’ve actually been nominated for their artwork at the HMA’s, it’s wicked! We were really pleased they wanted to work with us as well.

THAT MAKES ME WONDER, DOES THE ARTWORK HINT AT WHAT COULD BE NEXT FOR KNIFE BRIDE. ARE WE MISSING A BIGGER PICTURE WITH THE ARTWORK?

Sean Millsopp: Potentially, yeah potentially..

WE’RE HAVING A COMPETITION WITH THE ARTISTS AT 2000 TREES, AND THAT’S HOW MANY QUESTIONS CAN YOU NAME IN 15 SECONDS, IN 3.. 2.. 1.. GO!

[KNIFE BRIDE TREE COUNT: 4]

Sean Windle: We ain’t the smartest bunch [American accent].

Mollie Clack: PALM!

PALM! IT’S TOO LATE. VALIANT EFFORT. AT 2000 TREES FESTIVAL, IT’S A BEAUTIFUL AND DIVERSE PLACE, HOWEVER I FEEL IT’S MISSING A MASCOT. SO, I DESIGNED ONE, AND I WOULD LIKE YOU TO NAME AND GIVE IT A CATCHPHRASE.

Sean Millsopp: It looks like some sort of Pokemon!

Mollie Clack: And it’s a vampire [show’s vampire style t-shirt]

Sean Millsopp: Bite Me!

Sean Windle: “Bite Me” can be the catchphrase.

Mollie Clack: He does look a little flirtatious he’s like “Bite me. Bite me”.

Craig Glynn: Vampula!

VAMPULA! HONESTLY I THINK THAT IS VERY FITTING. VAMPULA WANTS TO “BITE ME”. ON THAT NOTE, WE WILL WRAP UP THE INTERVIEW THERE, IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE, SECRET PROJECTS OR OTHERWISE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO PLUG!

Sean Millsopp: New music coming soon!

Mollie Clack: Watch this space.

Sean Windle: We hope to be working with someone pretty soon –

Mollie Clack: Oh yeah! We definitely are going to be working with this person very soon. They’re friends of ours. And we’re really excited for the HMA’S, and thank you to anyone who came and saw us today at 2000 Trees!

THAT HAS BEEN A HIVE MAGAZINE INTERVIEW, AND THIS HAS BEEN KNIFE BRIDE!
