ONE ON ONE: AN INTERVIEW WITH ENOLA GAY!
We sat down with Enola Gay at 2000 Trees to talk about funny show stories, what franchises they’d love to soundtrack and More!
THIS IS A HIVE MAGAZINE INTERVIEW AND WE’RE HERE WITH THE FANTASTIC AND WONDERFULLY KIND ENOLA GAY, WHO LITERALLY JUST CALLED ME OVER, SAID THEY LIKED MY T-SHIRT AND WE’RE CHATTING FROM THERE. THAT’S HOW 2000 TREES IS THOUGH, IT’S ONE OF THOSE FESTIVALS. HOW DOES IT FEEL COMING DOWN HERE AND SEEING SO MANY DIFFERENT ARTISTS AND INTERACTING WITH THEM ALL?
Ffion Reilly: Everyone’s so nice man, like the lineup is 4 bands that are just friends of ours from festivals we’ve done for the past year or something, so to come down and everyone’s in the same sort of spot, as you just described just talking to people you know, everyone’s just so nice.
Joe McVeigh: Shoutout to ‘Witch Fever’ who we just saw on the main stage, they were awesome. Shoutout to ‘Gurriers’ who played yesterday. Shoutout to ‘Lambrini Girls’ and shoutout to of course ‘Snayx’.
IT’S SUCH AN ALL-STAR LINEUP, I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE, WELL I’LL TRY MY VERY BEST TO CATCH YOU GUYS, BUT EITHER WAY I’M GOING TO BE STREAMING YOUR MUSIC. IS THERE A PARTICULAR SONG FOR ANY NEW LISTENERS THAT YOU’D LIKE TO SHOUT OUT AND SAY THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO?
Ffion Reilly: I would say, the last song we put out was Leeches and it’s the opening song of our set, and it’s just sort of zero to a hundred quite quick, straight in, no messing around.
Joe McVeigh: It kind of encapsulates our 4 primary influences, noise, hip-hop, electronic music, punk.
Ffion Reilly: And punk recently, it talks a lot of shit about royalty, the Tories and shit that everyone feels you know, normal stuff, nothing crazy.
THERE’S SO MANY DIFFERENT POINTS OF VIEW WITH PUNK, ESPECIALLY WITH HOW THE WORLD’S GOING AT THE MOMENT, IT’S MAKING ITS OWN REVIVAL RIGHT NOW. AND WE SEE THAT HAPPEN WITH DIFFERENT GENRES ALL THE TIME. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE PART OF THAT REVIVAL?
Ffion Reilly: I mean, lyrics are just becoming more and more raw, people care less about, for example, radio play and bleeping out words and stuff matters so much less. To be a part of that just feels, one word we’ve used from the start is authenticity, it’s one of our main things, so seeing other bands who are authentic and other artists in general, you know, authenticity is just key man. It feels good to be able to say what you want you know?
Joe McVeigh: It feels organic, it just feels natural.
DEFINITELY, I THINK THERE’S A LOT OF TRUTHS TO BE SAID NOW AND I’VE NOTICED A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE JUST GOING STRAIGHT IN TELLING THEIR SOUL AND WRITING IT DOWN ON THE PAPER. YOU’VE TOLD ME YOU’VE DONE A LOT OF SHOWS AND THERE HAS TO BE SOME WEIRD STORIES GOING ON WITH THOSE?
Ffion Reilly: Well, last time we were in Bristol there were these like 6 fellas at the front of the crowd. 3 of them were like old guys, all big sort of burley guys, but there was this one skinny 60 year old guy, and he was pushing everyone and pushing and the crowd was moving back. It was getting that close where I was like I gotta stop this, but this guy was just pushing everyone all night, he was about 65 fucking years old. He honestly looked like Jimmy Saville. But there was this short fucking stout looking motherfucker that threw this guy and he went flying, and like his 65 year old ribcage just clattered off the edge of the fucking stage. He was lying there just fucked, and I was going to try help him but I didn’t give a shit man, if you can dish it out you can take it. I don’t know how that relates to your question.
NO THAT WAS IT, THAT IS A FUNNY AND/OR WEIRD STORY FROM SHOWS. YEAH I THINK ONE OF THE CRAZIEST THINGS ABOUT PUNK SHOWS IS THAT YOU GET SO MANY DIFFERENT PEOPLE OPENING UP THE PIT, BUT THE FACT THAT YOU SAID YOU WERE KEEPING AN EYE OUT AND SAYING LIKE WE GOT TO STOP THIS.
Ffion Reilly: I actually regret not saying anything, it was getting to the stage where it was like, this is not inclusive, it’s these 6 guys ruining the front of this fucking mosh pit, and they weren’t like throwing punches or anything, but these guys were just being real rough and you could see the rest of the crowd stepping back, it wasn’t good.
Joe McVeigh: Be hesitant, watch that sort of thing.
Ffion Reilly: They wanted to get involved and I was like this is not an inclusive environment. So when that guy hit the deck I felt nothing.
INCLUSIVITY IS SUCH AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR SCENE AND LIKE IT IS OUR SCENE HERE, IT’S SUCH A FANTASTIC THING TO SEE CHAMPIONING. I’VE BEEN ASKING EVERY ARTIST SO FAR, LET’S IMAGINE THERE’S A ZOMBIE OUTBREAK HAPPENING, YOU’VE GOT YOUR PHONE, THE ELECTRICITY HAS RAN OUT, POWER IS GONE, YOUR BATTERY IS DOWN TO LIKE 5%, WHAT SONGS ARE YOU GOING TO LISTEN TO IN THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE?
Ffion Reilly: System of a Down a hundred percent, ‘Toxicity’ start to finish.
Joe McVeigh: There’s an album I really wanna say, it’s one of my favourite albums but the guy that wrote it is an absolute cunt.
Ffion Reilly: You can’t listen to ‘Sun Kil Moon’ in a zombie apocalypse.
Joe McVeigh: The Benji album is goated.
Ffion Reilly: Maybe ‘Jay-Z’.
Joe McVeigh: Scissor Sisters? Radiohead, probably Kid A.
Ffion Reilly: Fallout: New Vegas Soundtrack.
WHICH LEADS VERY NICELY ONTO MY NEXT QUESTION. HAVE YOU GUYS SEEN THE NEW SPIDER VERSE MOVIE?
Joe McVeigh: Yes, it’s fucking unreal. It’s so good.
SO I’VE BEEN ASKING EVERY ARTIST AND EVERYONE’S LIKE “OH I NEED TO SEE IT”, I’M SO GLAD YOU HAVE. WE’VE GOT THE NEW BARBIE FILM COMING UP. SO, IF YOU GUYS COULD WRITE MUSIC FOR A MOVIE OR A VIDEO GAME FRANCHISE WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’D WRITE FOR?
Joe McVeigh: That’s such a brilliant question, probably one of the best questions we’ve ever been asked!
Ffion Reilly: If I was going to guess yours it would be for like Blade.
Joe McVeigh: That would be sick but I feel like we’d do a really cheesy job at that. It would be edgy as fuck.
Ffion Reilly: Personally I think I'd go for something down the folk route or the country route.
Joe McVeigh: Brokeback Mountain 2. Fuck You. Coming this summer. [jokingly]
Joe McVeigh: I actually do have a genuine answer, there’s a film director Robert Eggers, he did The Witch, The Lighthouse, so I would love to do something along those lines, very abstract. Some weird wanky student A24 horror film.
THOSE ARE THE ONES THAT ALWAYS HAVE THE BEST SOUNDTRACK IN AS WELL BECAUSE NO ONE'S EVER REALLY PAYING ATTENTION TO IT, IT GOES UNDER THE COVERS.
Joe McVeigh: Under the covers and under your skin.
Ffion Reilly: Did you ever watch that movie, Into the Wild?
NO I DIDN’T GET TO UNFORTUNATELY.
Ffion Reilly: Eddie Vedder did the soundtrack for that one and it’s a fucking unreal movie. Like that’s a great soundtrack and if I was ever going to do a soundtrack it’d probably be something like that.
INCREDIBLE. REAL QUICK I JUST WANT TO MAKE A SHOUTOUT TO METAL FOR GOOD’S STALL THEY LET US BORROW. DO YOU WANT TO SORT OF SHOUT YOURSELF OUT?
