ONE ON ONE: AN INTERVIEW WITH DELAIRE THE LIAR!

We sat down with Delaire The Liar at 2000 Trees to talk about their writing process, future plans, random spider facts and more!

WE ARE HERE WITH DELAIRE THE LIAR! YOU GUYS ARE ALREADY FEELING MERRY AND AFTER THAT AMAZING SET, I CAN’T BLAME YOU. THE ENERGY WAS ELECTRIC, EVERYPME WAS BOUNCING WITH YOU AND IT’S ONLY WEDNESDAY! HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE PLAYING NEW SONGS IN FRONT OF A NEW AUDIENCE?

Em Lodge: So good! We released ‘bite trap.’ How long ago? A couple months ago? And honestly we haven’t had the chance to play it that many times.. This is maybe off the top of my head the sixth time we’ve played it live. I swear every time we play it, it just feels so much better and better. I just love it! Good song, I can’t lie.

Ffin Colley: And the new new (referencing an unreleased track).. Very good.

DOES THE NEW SONG HAVE A NAME?

Ffin Colley and Em Lodge: Yeah, it does!

IS THIS A HIVE EXCLUSIVE..?

Ffin Colley: Nooo [jokingly]

I TRIED, YOU CAN’T BLAME ME [JOKINGLY].. I LOVE THE FACT THAT IT HAD YOUR VOICE LEADING (EM), HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE THE DOMINATING VOICE IN THAT SONG?

Em Lodge: Weird. Good. Exciting. A mixture of all those things because I’m very much used to Ffin having the forefront and I find quite a lot of safety in that. So then because the song starts off really quiet it does feel very exposing, but it has honestly helped me build confidence in myself as well. I’m really happy that we play it.. It feels scary but I'm really happy that we do it. And I think it’s a really good song!

Chaz Tomlinson: It’s a big rocker!

Ffin Colley: A big rocker! And Em’s got a beautiful voice, and it’s like—

Chaz Tomlinson: Voice of an angel!

Ffin Colley: [jokingly] shut the fuck up.. [everyone laughs].. Yano there was like a glimpse of the potential when ‘furnace’ came out of just how much Em can step into that role. And the process there was a lot of nurturing until Em felt confident enough to step into it. But now, it’s honestly just so fucking good.. And so whole when we play that song. It’s brilliant, you know?

Em Lodge: I can’t wait for it to come out to be honest. Really excited.

EVERYONE WAS ENRAPTURED BY THAT PERFORMANCE AND YOU MAKE GREAT SONGS. ONE THING I’VE BEEN CURIOUS ABOUT IS WHAT GOES INTO CREATING THE SONG PROCESS? EVERYTHINGS SO EMOTIONAL, RAW AND.. EPIC.

Ffin Colley: Well we’ve kinda taken a bit of a different attitude towards the songs we’re writing at the minute, they’re less drawing from personal experiences and more on creating stories. Which there’s obviously quite a lot of evocative and raw material in our back-catalog but sometimes sitting in that and having to perform that, you’re revisiting a lot of quite tense emotions at times in your life which can be hard to properly process and heal from those moments when you’ve got to keep revisiting it. So this is almost a bit of an experiment, drawing from a much larger source and trying to be creative with the writing. The content is still emotional and considered, but it’s less so from a personal experience and more of a narrative point of view which has been really interesting to write and work that way. It’s been quite challenging, but also came quite naturally.

ARE YOU LOOKING TO WEAVE TOGETHER A STORY THROUGH THESE NEW TRACKS? IS THIS MAYBE A NEW CONCEPT THAT WE CAN SEE BEING LAID OUT?

Ffin Colley: There’s a theme—

Em Lodge: There’s always a theme, we’re always one step ahead.

Ffin Colley: There’s definitely an overarching concept that ties everything we’re going to be doing in the coming months together.

YOU PREVIOUSLY TOURED WITH PRESS TO MECO WHICH IS WHERE I SAW YOU FIRST IN BIRMINGHAM, IT WAS SUCH A GOOD SHOW, AND NOW I’M SEEING YOU AGAIN! BUT HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE PLAYING ON THE SAME SET AS THEM AS THEY’RE DOING THEIR LAST PERFORMANCE?

Em Lodge: So sad! The fact we had to leave early I was like [sad noises] but they’re so good!

Ffin Colley: [Jokingly] not that we aren’t thankful to be here!

Em Colley: They’re the loveliest people as well, and for me personally it was the first tour I’d ever been on so I was really nervous, really excited.. Just felt like an absolute baby in that kind of environment and they were just the most lovely boys ever and write really really fucking cool songs so..

Ffin Colley: I think it’s sad and it isn’t though, their journey came to an end with Press To Meco and to see it go out with such a bang tonight, and 2000 Trees has always been a place that’s so appreciative of Press To Meco and everything they’ve done, all the work that they’ve done and their skill and talent, and now they’re moving onto [unpeople?] which is a very exciting new venture from Luke and Jake so it seems like a natural close for them. So to witness the final moments of that band before they go and do things that feel very fulfilling for each of  the members whatever that may be. It’s sick! Because things do come to a natural close, that’s just the way of life really. So to just be a part of that and be able to watch it is great. There’s some sadness there, but it’s also very exciting where they’re going onto next I think.

IT MUST BE INSPIRING FOR YOU SEEING THE SPARK STILL BURNING FOR NEW STUFF TO BE CREATED, AND I CAN HEAR IT IN THE NEW MATERIAL YOU’RE MAKING AS WELL. WITH THAT BEING SAID, IS THERE THE POSSIBILITY THAT YOU WOULD WANT TO WORK WITH ANY ARTISTS SIMILAIR TO PRESS TO MECO, UNPEOPLE OR FUTURE ARTISTS?

Em Lodge: Yeah!—

Ffin Colley: Fucking absolutely, have you met them? They’re so sick and so nice! At the bottom of it you want to work with people you really admire and you like. I just think they’re wonderful, we all do. We had such a good time touring with them and we got really close. So for sure, it’s not always the case, but when you find someone you click with it’s just like ‘yeah alright well we’re in this now’.

Em Lodge: There’s quite a few bands that we’ve only been having casual conversations with here and there but I think we’ve got a lot of people in mind, because we haven’t done a track with someone else guesting, so I think it would definitely be something we’d want to do at some point.

Ffin Colley: There are conversations to be had.

Em Lodge: We’ve got people in mind.. For things.. Future things..

TO WRAP THIS UP.. AND IT’S A BIT OF A WEIRD ONE.. IN THE BIZARRRE OCCURRENCE OF A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE YOU CAN ONLY HAVE YOUR PHONE AND IT’S GOT A FEW HOURS LEFT TO LISTEN TO YOUR FAVOURITE SONGS, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO LISTEN TO AND WHY?

Em Lodge: The album ‘Somewhere City’ by Origami Angel because they’re the best band in the world. It’s a half hour album that would definitely be up there!

Chaz Tomlinson: I think my last song would have to be ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’, what better way to go out!?

Em Lodge: Or you need to listen to ‘Where Is My Mind’ by Pixies so it’s like in Fight Club when the whole world’s crumbling.

THAT’S SUCH A GOOD FIGHT, I LOVE THAT FOR AN END OF THE WORLD SITUATION!

Ffin Colley: I don't know.. There’s something in me where my immediate response is I’m going to listen to ‘One Wing’ by The Chariots but also I think in Guardians of the Galaxy, the soundtrack to that is so good! But I can picture myself going out swinging listening to ‘all i do’ by stevie wonder whilst im just battering the shit out of some zombies, they overcome me and im getting my shit fucked up.. But I’m vibing at the same time! So that would probably be my going out song.. Not going out to party.. Going out to die!

ON THE THEME OF SUPER HEROES, HAVE YOU SEEN THE NEW SPIDER-VERSE MOVIE?

Chaz Tomlinson: No, I want to so bad though!

Ffin Colley: Oh but an interesting thing I learnt recently, so apparently, Spiderman obviously shoots webs out of his hand, and apparently that’s a sexy thing with spiders. They shoot webs out their butts, and out of their arms it’s when they’re trying to make love. So no I haven’t, but that’s a new twist on Spiderman, so really, he’s shooting his cum at you.

WE LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERYDAY HERE! THE REASON I WAS ASKING.. WHAT MOVIE OR VIDEO GAME FRANCHISE WOULD YOU LIKE DELAIRE THE LIAR’S MUSIC ON AND WHY

Em Lodge: Any movie by Edgar Wright, I’m obsessed!

Chaz Tomlinson: I thought you were going to say The Sims.

Em Lodge: Actually, I really want to record one of our songs in Simlish. They do that! They’ve got artists to come in, Paramore did it, Katy Perry did it, but they get artists to re-record the vocals in simlish.

Chaz Tomlinson: How would you record our new track in Simlish?

Em Lodge: They give me a piece of paper with the language, I don’t know.

Ffin Colley: Do it now, you know Sims better than anyone I know.

Em Lodge: Now I feel really embarrassed. I don't want to do it.. But it could be a thing! And I’d love that to be a thing!

SIMS IF YOU’RE LISTENING, YOU KNOW WHO TO GET IN TOUCH WITH NEXT!

Em Lodge: EA! I’ve bought all your expansion packs please pay me!

Ffin Colley: It’s in the game!

WELL THANK YOU FOR SITTING DOWN AND CHATTING ABSOLUTE BOLLOCKS WITH ME. WE’VE LEARNT SOME AMAZING THINGS, THANK YOU AND I HOPE YOU ENJOY THE REST OF THE FESTIVAL!
